Holdrege & Kull provided design services for the improvement of this bridge over Little Wolf Creek. A federally funded HBP project, H&K’s services included performing a geotechnical subsurface investigation, followed by the provision of engineering design recommendations for earthwork and structural improvements. The investigation was performed following the guidelines and reporting requirements of Caltrans’ Foundation Report Preparation for Bridges. H&K’s recommendations included design parameters for foundation types and embedment depths, allowable soil bearing capacity, foundation soil friction coefficients, retaining wall lateral earth pressure coefficients, and seismic design parameters. Project challenges included limited access during the investigation, and resistant, shallow rock. The new bridge abutments will consist of spread footings founded on competent, weathered rock.
