Chaparral Drive Washout – Lake Wildwood, CA

Following intense rain storms in mid-February 2014, the Lake Wildwood Association contacted H&K to investigate conditions surrounding a deteriorating corrugated metal pipe culvert beneath one of the community’s major roads. Later that morning, H&K observed the site conditions and provided recommendations to public works personnel during the site visit. The short-term recommendations included road closure if flow exceeded a certain level in the culvert. Later that week during another significant rainfall event, water levels in Wildwood Creek reached the reference mark established by H&K, prompting Lake Wildwood personnel to close the road. When crews arrived the following morning, they discovered the roadway surrounding the culvert had washed out. As a result of H&K’s recommendations and quick turn-around, potentially life-threatening accidents to numerous local motorists were avoided
