Chico State University Taylor Hall II – Chico, CA

Holdrege & Kull provided materials testing and special inspection services for this new, three-story, 92,000 s.f. building on the CSUC campus. Replacing the original Taylor Hall, this new building houses the Arts and Humanities and includes a fixed seating recital hall, rehearsal and recording studios, English and foreign language classrooms and labs, art classrooms, art studios, art galleries, and administrative offices.

Construction of this building is Type III-B, mixed occupancy, fully sprinklered, and with enclosed mechanical roof penthouses. H&K is providing its materials testing and special inspection services per the requirements of the 2010 California Building Code (CBC) and as specified within the contract documents. In addition, H&K provided recommendations for cribbing to support a Manitowoc 777T crane that was used to erect portions of the structural steel.

This project poses unique challenges in that construction is taking place within an active college campus, and space is extremely limited for the laying out and staging of materials. To accommodate this, H&K is helping to facilitate the immediate incorporation of materials directly into the project upon arrival by staffing the project with special inspectors on site who are certified in multiple disciplines. This has allowed the project to remain on schedule. In addition, major steel fabrication occurred in 23-hour shifts per day, 6 to 7 days per week, requiring H&K to provide the use of 6 to 7 welding inspectors simultaneously.

The building is being constructed to LEED Silver specifications and is expected to be completed and occupied in the fall of 2016.
