Holdrege & Kull provided geotechnical engineering consulting services during construction of three wine caves totaling 5,000 square feet of underground space. The project, near Plymouth, includes one 10-ft.-wide by 13-ft.-tall wine barrel area, one 8-ft.-wide by 10-ft.-tall storage area, and one 20-ft.-wide by 13-ft.-tall entertainment cave. The caves were constructed in material ranging from loamy soil and highly weathered decomposed granite to competent granite “boulders”. A combination of rock dowels, wire mesh, steel ribs, and shotcrete provided shoring and structural integrity. The caves were designed by SAGE Architects from Sacramento and constructed by Glen Ragsdale Underground Associates, Inc. from Napa, California.
